What is the difference between SEO and SEM?

Search marketing is the combination of two different yet equally important elements: search engine optimisation (SEO) and search engine marketing (SEM).

SEO is an organic strategy. Your website is optimised in a way that leads Google or any other search engine to see it as the most relevant and trustworthy result for a given query, thus placing you high in the search engine result pages. This is a long term effort that generally takes months to bear fruit, but the rewards for your work can be incredible (as seen in the testimonials below). You could potentially see your company being served up to ready-to-buy customers without having to give Google a cent.

SEM is a paid strategy. Unlike SEO, it guarantees that you’ll be shown at the top of the SERP, as part of the handful of results marked with the word ‘Ad’ at the very top of the page. In order to show up in these results, advertisers bid on the keywords and phrases that they’d like to be displayed for, and only pay when their ad is clicked (hence why these are sometimes referred to as pay per click/PPC ads.
